The Gilpin Casino at Black Hawk made history as one of the area’s first casinos when it opened in 1992, and the building itself originates all the way back to the previous century, even once having a small schoolhouse on the second floor.

It was in 1869 that the historical building was initially opened as a hotel of the same name. The entire building is now a casino, however, with no hotel facilities remaining.

The casino was opened by Jacobs Entertainment Inc., which also operates and runs The Lodge Casino at Black Hawk, as well as several other gaming properties across the U.S.

The casino has one restaurant on-site, Lucille Malone’s Restaurant, a steakhouse serving all-day breakfast. The restaurant is said to have been named after a young teacher who jumped to her death a century ago after learning that her lover had been run over by a wagon in front of the hotel.
